Overview to The Planets in Astrology
Zodiac signs get most of the attention in pop astrology, but they’re only part of the story.
The real action comes from the planets.
And let me pause here and say that what in astrology, what we call planets in astrology would send NASA into a tizzy, and not just re: poor Pluto’s demotion.
We also use the term planets as a bucket term to describe things like the sun and moon, and even sometimes include the Rising sign, which isn’t even a physical entity. So yes, I do remember from 5th grade science class that the sun is a star, no need to lecture me.
In natal astrology, each planet represents a different part of you: how you think, what you want, how you react, how you connect, where you stall out, where you grow.
In transit astrology, the movement of the planets determines how the current placement of the planets plays out right now. The most classic example is Mercury retrograde, when communication glitches and delays tend to spike, because Mercury rules communication.
I’m going to focus on the natal astrology side of planets below, because I think it’s the easiest to grasp when you’re a beginner.
The Planets
Sun Sign
The role you were meant for when you step into your main character energy, whether you're crushing boardrooms, overwatering plants, or becoming “that person” who always organizes group trips.
Moon Sign
This is your inner world and how you navigate emotions. Think of it like the internal operating system that determines whether you need snacks, naps, a fight club, or niche YouTube playlists to avoid a full system crash.
Rising Sign
The outfit your soul chose for the first three seconds of any interaction, like “mysterious art teacher” or “guy who always knows where the bathroom is.”
Mercury Sign
Your brain’s user manual that decides things like whether you're the type whose grocery is organized by aisle with the store’s layout in mind, or who has incredibly strong opinions with zero interest in sharing.
Venus Sign
Your love language in the form of hyper-specific crushes on coffee rituals, absurdly soft hoodies, or anyone who laughs at your exquisite meme selection.
Mars Sign
The way you throw yourself at tasks and decisions, whether it’s a smooth PowerPoint for every workout, the energy of an assassin, or someone who refuses to make a single move without a vision board and a lucky feather.
Jupiter Sign
Your personal expansion setting. The area of life where things inflate like a balloon animal at a birthday party, bringing luck, confidence, and the occasional tendency to enthusiastically say yes to projects that later require three calendars and a snack drawer.
Saturn Sign
Your built-in life coach with a clipboard and a very specific training regimen. This placement describes where effort compounds over time, turning early awkwardness into the kind of competence that quietly terrifies people who love shortcuts.
Uranus Sign
Your internal glitch in the matrix. The part of you that suddenly decides the established method feels boring and introduces a wildly creative alternative that leaves everyone staring at you like you just invented a new category of idea.
Neptune Sign
Your imagination’s fog machine. This placement governs the dreamy, cinematic lens you place over certain parts of life, where inspiration flows easily and reality occasionally dissolves into a soft-focus montage featuring music, art, or very questionable late-night decisions.
Pluto Sign
Your personal underworld renovation project. The life area where everything eventually goes through an intense plot twist, emerging rebuilt, upgraded, and carrying the quiet energy of someone who has seen the basement of the human psyche and installed better lighting.
North Node
Your long-game character arc, the direction your life keeps nudging you toward like a GPS that gently reroutes every time you try to exit toward “familiar nonsense.” Growth happens here, usually with a weirdly specific sense of destiny.
Midheaven (MC)
Your public reputation trailer. The vibe people associate with your name when your résumé enters the room before you do, whether that reads as “competent adult who owns a label maker” or “enigmatic professional whose calendar contains mysterious power lunches.”
Lilith
Your feral inner narrator who refuses polite applause and prefers dramatic exits. This placement describes the energy that walks into a room thinking, “interesting rules you all invented,” then proceeds to rewrite the atmosphere with a raised eyebrow.
Chiron
Your lifelong side quest involving the oddly specific life theme you understand so well it becomes part therapist office, part survival guide. Over time, this placement turns personal lore into the exact wisdom someone else desperately needed to hear.
Key takeaways
All of us have these planets/points in a different Zodiac sign, which is why we all communicate differently (Mercury in Cancer is quite different from Mercury in Aries), process emotions differently (Moon in Pisces vs Moon in Leo), and so on.
And even if you do have the same sun sign or moon sign as someone else, keep in mind that you may have your moon in a different house, which can explain things like why your best friend and sister are both October-born Libras, but seem to have totally different personalities. One may have their sun in Libra in in the 2nd house, the other in the 9th. One expresses Libra through money, possessions, and stability (2nd house), while the other channels it into beliefs, travel, and big-picture thinking (9th house).
