Beginner Guide to the Eleventh House
In astrology, your birth chart is divided into twelve houses, with each one representing a different area of life. The 11th House covers friendship, community, groups, networks, social connections, collective causes, hopes, and the future you imagine for yourself.
Basically, it’s you … plus everyone else.
Let’s pause here though. The 11th House often gets described as the “social house” which makes it sound like astrology expects everyone to have a standing Thursday happy hour and seven bridesmaids.
Its territory is much bigger than that.
The 11th House describes your relationship to the collective. That can mean a tight-knit friend group, but it can also mean your professional network, your neighborhood association, your book club, your volunteer organization, your online community, the other three people who share your extremely specific hobby, or the 40,000 strangers who subscribe to your newsletter and know an alarming amount about your opinions on Japanese fountain pens.
You can be deeply introverted and have a very active 11th House. Social connection doesn’t require constantly being social. Sometimes community is six people crammed around a restaurant table, but some signs and placements may take more of an observing role; that idea that you can love people but not actually love being around people.
The 11th House is where your collective life plays out: group texts, fantasy leagues, volunteer projects, professional organizations, Discord servers, neighborhood cleanups, and chaotic potlucks where four people brought hummus and nobody brought plates.
It can also describe how you behave once other people enter the equation.
The sign on your 11th House can give clues about the communities you gravitate toward and how you participate in them. Leo may become the unofficial organizer because apparently somebody has to make the invitation look good. Virgo may show up to the volunteer event with sunscreen, Band-Aids, extra Sharpies, and a better system for checking everyone in. Aquarius may join a group devoted to municipal composting and somehow end up on a subcommittee discussing citywide infrastructure by Thursday.
Planets here add their own personality. Venus can make friendships, social connections, and collaboration especially rewarding. Mercury may bring lots of acquaintances, conversations, introductions, and or being the one who always seems to know a person who knows a person. Saturn can make someone selective about social connections, preferring a few relationships built over years and quietly disappearing from any group chat that sends 63 messages before breakfast.
The 11th House also rules hopes, dreams, and long-term aspirations.
These are the things you want for your future that stretch beyond today’s errands and obligations. Write the book. Start the nonprofit. Move to Copenhagen. Build a community garden. Somehow arrange your life so you never have to attend another 7:30 a.m. meeting.
There’s a reason these aspirations share a house with community. A surprising number of big ideas require other people eventually. Someone funds it. Someone reads it. Someone introduces you to the right person. Someone says, “I know a guy.” Someone agrees to help you move the 400-pound vintage cabinet you confidently bought on Facebook Marketplace.
In the 11th House, hope is a team sport. You float an idea to someone over pizza, and sometimes they say, “Let’s do it.” Next thing you know, you’re changing the world.
Which is how a shocking percentage of human civilization probably started.
The 11th House is the web of people, communities, connections, and shared ideas that reminds you there are other humans out there doing their own weird little things too.
