Beginner Guide to the Seventh House — Astrology
In astrology, your birth chart is divided into twelve houses, with each one representing a different area of life. The 7th House covers committed relationships, marriage, business partnerships, contracts, and the other people with whom you formally decide, for better or worse, “Okay, we’re doing this together.”
It begins at the Descendant, the point directly opposite your Ascendant or Rising sign. If the Ascendant describes you entering the room, the Descendant describes the person standing across from you once you get there.
Here’s where other people waltz in and hold up a funhouse mirror.
The 7th House is the land of instant chemistry, sudden annoyance, and the deeply inconvenient “oh no, they’re me” realization. It describes the qualities you’re drawn to in other people, the dynamics that tend to emerge in your closest partnerships, and how you handle the ongoing administrative challenge of sharing a life with another human being.
Because relationships involve an astonishing amount of administration.
Who calls the plumber? Whose family gets Thanksgiving this year? Are we people who arrive at the airport 90 minutes early or three hours early? Why are there six empty LaCroix cans on your nightstand? Did you tell them we’d come to dinner Saturday? What do you mean you already told them yes?
The 7th House is interested in how you negotiate shared reality.
The sign on your 7th House can give clues about the qualities you seek out in partners and how you approach commitment. Aries may be drawn to independent, direct people who will pick a restaurant rather than replying “whatever you want” six times. Libra may want someone who understands cooperation, romance, and why the living-room rug absolutely changes the room. Capricorn may appreciate a partner who shows up when they said they would, has a functioning credit score, and knows how to make a reservation.
Planets in the 7th House add another layer. Venus can make partnership, harmony, and connection especially important. Mars may bring passion, competition, or recurring debates that somehow begin with dishwasher loading technique and end with a comprehensive review of events dating back to 2019. Saturn can make commitment feel serious, weighty, or something entered into only after the terms have been thoroughly reviewed.
Marriage is one traditional 7th House topic, although the house covers committed one-to-one partnerships of many kinds. Business partners belong here too, along with contracts and formal agreements. Any situation where two people look at each other and say, “You take that half, I’ll take this half, and please put it in writing” has a little 7th House energy.
Then there’s one of astrology’s stranger 7th House assignments: open enemies.
These are the people you know you’re in conflict with. The coworker competing for the same promotion. The neighbor who has declared war over the property line. The person whose name makes you sit up straighter when it appears in the group chat.
Partners and opponents share the same house because both require you to deal directly with another person as an equal player.
The 7th House is where another person gets a vote.
Sometimes they convince you to sign up for salsa lessons. Sometimes they co-sign the haircut you both realize was a mistake halfway through.
Either way, the duet has begun.
