Here are the apps I use most often as a professional writer.

IA Writer

Something about this app is just magical to me. The interface actually makes me want to write, whether it's notes to self, blog posts, story ideas, brain dumps, etc. I also will often write scenes for my novels in here, though because there is no way to manually sort files, it's not the best for organizing long-form writing.

Neo

Created by author Hugh Howey, this is a newcomer on the writing app front. I'm using it to write my newest novel, and so far I'm loving it. It still has a few bugs and quirks, but I'm assuming stability will improve as development continues. As of now, it's poised to replace Ulysses (which I've fallen out of love with) as novel-writing app.

Things

My longtime task manager, this beautiful little app basically manages my entire life. It's how I track which scenes to write each day, reminds me to wash my sheets every Sunday, tracks blog post ideas. It also pulls in calendar events, so I use it as my "daily dashboard."

Microsoft Word

I hate this app. I only use it in the very final stages of my manuscripts, and only because it's the industry standard in Big Publishing and required by my publishers when I collaborate in copyedits. Since I do use it (under duress), so it's on the list.
