Beginner Guide to Chiron — Astrology
Chiron is a small celestial body orbiting between Saturn and Uranus, classified as a centaur.
Astrologically, it points to the stuff you’re weirdly sensitive about. The old rejection you’re completely over but can still quote verbatim. The teacher who called you lazy in fourth grade. The friend who once said, “You’re just not really a creative person,” and congratulations to her on the lovely imaginary argument you won against her in the shower this morning.
It’s fine, everything is fine…
Chiron isn’t one of the standard planets in a traditional birth chart reading, and plenty of astrologers skip it. Increasingly, modern astrologers, myself included, find all sorts of useful little nuggets hiding there. Sometimes your chart makes considerably more sense once you discover where it keeps the grudge from seventh grade.
Chiron in Your Birth Chart
Chiron is often called the “wounded healer,” which comes from Greek mythology. Chiron was a centaur, teacher, and healer who could heal everyone except himself after being struck by a poisoned arrow.
Extremely subtle metaphor, guys!
Anyway, in your birth chart, Chiron can point toward an area where you carry an unusual amount of sensitivity. Something happened here. Maybe one kid laughed at your shoes in 1996 and you have purchased footwear with the seriousness of a military procurement officer ever since.
That’s the zippy little thing about Chiron. The original event and the size of the bruise don’t always match.
Chiron spends years in some signs and considerably less time in others because of its irregular orbit, so its sign can be somewhat generational. Its house and aspects help show where the story gets specifically yours.
Chiron in the 2nd House may bring particular sensitivity around money, security, possessions, self-worth, or having enough. You can have six months of expenses in savings and still cut open the toothpaste tube because there are at least two more days in there and we are apparently preparing for winter.
Chiron in the 3rd House may point toward old sensitivities around communication, learning, school, siblings, or feeling heard and understood. Maybe you were the kid terrified of reading aloud. Thirty years later, you can give a presentation to 200 people and still remember exactly which classmate laughed when you mispronounced “epitome.”
Chiron in the 10th House may connect that tender spot with achievement, career, authority, reputation, or feeling successful enough. You can have the title, the office, the awards, and a small internal department still compiling evidence that everyone is about to discover you got in through a clerical error.
Aspects to Chiron make its influence much more personal.
Chiron conjunct the Sun can tie the sore spot closely to identity, confidence, recognition, or feeling entitled to take up space. Being left off one email can become an unexpectedly comprehensive referendum on whether anyone has ever respected you.
Chiron square Mercury can connect it with communication, intelligence, learning, or being understood. Someone says, “I’m confused by this,” and suddenly every red pen that ever touched your homework has entered the conference room.
Chiron opposite Venus can bring old sensitivities into relationships, attractiveness, money, pleasure, or feeling valued. Someone tells you that you look great and your brain immediately begins cross-examining the witness.
And here’s where Chiron gets especially interesting.
The things we’ve been sensitive about for years often make us unusually good at spotting the same thing in someone else.
The person who spent childhood feeling left out notices within thirty seconds that someone at the party has nowhere to stand. The adult who struggled in school immediately recognizes the kid quietly pretending they understand the assignment. The person who grew up with money anxiety knows exactly why their friend earning six figures still steals the tiny shampoo bottles from hotels.
Chiron can create an oddly specific form of expertise.
You know where the pothole is because you have driven into it 400 times.
Chiron in the Sky Right Now
Chiron keeps moving too, although it takes its sweet time.
It needs roughly 50 years to travel through the zodiac, and because its orbit is unusual, it spends dramatically different amounts of time in different signs.
When astrologers talk about Chiron entering a sign, they’re looking at a longer collective period involving the particular sore spots and sensitivities associated with that sign.
Chiron also moves through the houses of your birth chart.
When Chiron moves through your 2nd House, old issues around money, security, self-worth, or having enough may become easier to spot. Maybe you finally realize that checking your bank account four times before buying a $12 sandwich has relatively little to do with the sandwich.
Chiron moving through your 7th House can bring sensitivities around relationships, partnership, rejection, trust, or feeling chosen into sharper focus. Your partner says, “I need some time alone tonight,” and suddenly six completely unrelated incidents from 1998 have requested admission to the conversation.
Chiron moving through your 10th House can bring old questions around achievement, recognition, competence, or authority back into the room. You finally get the promotion and discover, somewhat rudely, that the promotion did not automatically delete every insecurity you had about deserving it.
Chiron also makes aspects to your natal planets.
Chiron conjunct your natal Moon can bring old family patterns, memories, needs, or sensitivities closer to the surface. Something your mother said when you were nine may unexpectedly clock in for another shift.
Chiron square your natal Mercury can make communication or being understood feel unusually loaded. A completely ordinary “Can you explain what you mean?” can somehow require a 20-minute walk afterward.
Chiron opposite your natal Mars can bring sensitivities around anger, assertion, desire, competition, or standing up for yourself into focus. You may discover that your inability to tell someone “Please stop doing that” has a surprisingly elaborate origin story involving your father, a soccer coach, and an incident at Applebee’s in 2003.
And then there’s the Chiron return.
Around age 50ish, transiting Chiron returns to approximately the same position it occupied when you were born.
By then, you’ve had roughly five decades to become intimately acquainted with whatever Chiron has been pointing at. The interesting question becomes what you know now that you couldn’t possibly have known when the bruise was fresh.
Maybe you fixed it.
Maybe you learned to live with it.
Maybe you still remember what Jessica said in the cafeteria on October 14, 1989, and frankly Jessica knows what she did.
