Beginner Guide to Lilith — Astrology

Lilith is where astrology keeps the part of you that has absolutely had it.

For me, personally, I think of it as my middle finger placement. 🖕🏼

More specifically, when astrologers talk about Lilith, they usually mean Black Moon Lilith, a calculated point based on the Moon’s orbit rather than an actual planet or asteroid floating around in space.

Astrologically, Lilith is associated with autonomy, rejection, shame, taboo, anger, desire, and the parts of ourselves we learn are apparently a little too much for polite company. The opinion you stopped sharing because everyone got weird about it. The ambition you learned to downplay. The part of your personality your ex called “intimidating” and your best friend calls “Tuesday.”

Lilith isn’t part of every standard birth chart reading. Plenty of astrologers barely touch it. Others, myself included, find it extremely useful when you want to know where someone has a particularly strong reaction to being told who they’re allowed to be.

Lilith in Your Birth Chart

Black Moon Lilith gets its name from Lilith, a figure with roots in ancient Mesopotamian mythology who later appears in Jewish folklore. In the version most relevant to modern astrology, Lilith is often portrayed as Adam’s first wife, who refused to submit to him and left Eden.

The mythology is considerably more complicated than the Instagram version, but astrologically, the symbolism stuck.

Lilith became associated with refusal.

Your Lilith placement can point toward the area of life where you’re especially sensitive to being controlled, judged, shamed, dismissed, or told to make yourself more acceptable.

It can also show where you learned early that some part of you got a better reception when it was turned down a few clicks.

Maybe you were “bossy,” so you learned to phrase every request like a casual suggestion. Maybe you were “dramatic,” so now you deliver devastating news with the emotional range of a parking attendant. Maybe you were “too ambitious,” so every professional accomplishment gets introduced with, “I just got lucky.”

Lilith remembers the edit.

Lilith in the 2nd House can bring this territory into money, possessions, self-worth, earning, and independence. Maybe depending financially on someone makes every cell in your body start looking for an exit. Maybe you grew up hearing that wanting money was shallow and now feel compelled to explain every expensive purchase like you’re testifying before Congress.

Lilith in the 4th House can connect it with family, home, roots, privacy, or the role you were assigned growing up. Maybe your family decided you were “the difficult one” in 1997 and has continued renewing the contract despite substantial evidence that Uncle Gary is doing considerably more interesting work.

Lilith in the 10th House can show up around career, ambition, authority, reputation, and visibility. You may have a particularly strong reaction to being underestimated professionally. Someone introduces you as “helping out with the business,” and you spend the rest of dinner resisting the urge to distribute organizational charts.

Aspects to Lilith can make the story even more personal.

Lilith conjunct the Sun can make questions of identity, visibility, confidence, and self-expression especially charged. Being told to tone yourself down may produce the exact opposite result.

Lilith square Mercury can put some voltage around speaking, writing, opinions, and being heard. You may have learned that certain thoughts made people uncomfortable. Unfortunately for everyone involved, you still have them.

Lilith opposite Venus can bring the tension into relationships, attractiveness, pleasure, money, and desirability. There can be a complicated relationship with being wanted, approved of, or considered “appropriate.” Someone says, “You’d be prettier if…” and accidentally creates a lifelong commitment to doing precisely the opposite.

Lilith can also point toward qualities we judge harshly in other people because we have a complicated relationship with those qualities ourselves.

The person who makes you irrationally angry because she takes up too much space. The coworker you call arrogant because he asks directly for the promotion.

The friend whose ability to say “No, I don’t want to” without providing a 14-page supporting brief feels almost criminal.

Lilith can either be the thing you’re suppressing or the thing that makes you snap. Often a little of both.

Lilith in the Sky Right Now

Black Moon Lilith takes roughly nine years to complete a full cycle and spending about nine months in each sign.

When astrologers say “Lilith enters Scorpio,” they’re talking about a calculated point moving into Scorpio, bringing Lilith themes like autonomy, taboo, anger, shame, desire, and refusal into Scorpio territory.

Lilith also moves through the houses of your birth chart.

Lilith moving through your 2nd House can bring questions around money, independence, self-worth, possessions, and what you’re willing to depend on other people for. You may suddenly become extremely aware of every financial arrangement that comes with invisible strings attached.

Lilith moving through your 6th House can bring those themes into work, routines, obligations, and everyday responsibilities. The coworker who has been asking you to “quickly” fix their spreadsheet every Thursday for two years may discover that this particular Thursday has arrived with new management.

Lilith moving through your 7th House can bring autonomy, power, anger, desire, and boundaries into relationships and partnerships. Agreements you previously tolerated may suddenly feel much harder to tolerate. The sentence “But you’ve always been okay with it” may receive an unexpectedly comprehensive response.

Lilith can also make aspects to your natal planets.

Lilith conjunct your natal Sun can bring questions of identity, autonomy, visibility, or self-expression into sharper focus. You may become considerably less interested in being the version of yourself that earns the easiest applause.

Lilith square Mercury can put pressure on communication and opinions. Something you’ve been politely declining to say may begin drafting itself.

Lilith opposite Venus can stir up questions around attraction, approval, relationships, pleasure, beauty, and being liked. You may notice exactly how many decisions you’ve been making because somebody somewhere might find you more appealing that way.

Lilith transits can be especially useful for spotting the places where resentment has been quietly accumulating.

You know the kind.

You say, “Of course, happy to!” and then close the laptop in a way that is incredibly scary.
