Beginner Guide to Your MC — Astrology

The Midheaven, usually abbreviated MC, is the part of your birth chart connected with reputation, achievement, ambition, recognition, and what you’d like your name to become associated with over time.

It often gets flattened to “career stuff,” but it’s much more about legacy.

Maybe you want to write books. Paint. Raise great kids. Build a business. Become the person everyone calls when the neighborhood association has finally agrees the windmill must go. Perhaps you long to make incredible furniture. Run a marathon at 70. Have the garden strangers slow down to look at.

Basically, MC is interested in the stuff you’d be pleased to have mentioned when someone says, “Oh, you know Lauren? She’s the one who…”

Whatever you desperately hope comes after that sentence requires a look at your MC.

Your MC in Your Birth Chart

MC stands for Medium Coeli, Latin for “middle of the sky,” and it’s one of the four major angles in a birth chart.

Its exact position depends on your birth time and location, so this is one of those placements where “I think I was born sometime just after midnight” is less helpful than your mother believes.

The MC appears at the top of most birth charts and is closely associated with the 10th House.

They’re related, although they aren’t exactly the same thing.

The 10th House covers the broader territory of achievement, responsibility, authority, reputation, and the roles you occupyin the wider world. The MC is a specific point in the chart that can tell us more about what you aspire toward and what you may eventually become known for.

Your MC sign describes the flavor all of that takes.

An Aries MC may want to be known as someone who did something first, took charge, started something, or had the guts to go ahead while everyone else was still discussing logistics.

A Gemini MC may become known for communicating, writing, teaching, connecting people, knowing things, or doing so many unrelated things that filling out the “occupation” box on a form becomes a philosophical exercise.

A Taurus MC may care about building something solid, useful, beautiful, profitable, or enduring. This could be a company. It could be a home. It could be a vegetable garden producing enough zucchini to become a regional threat.

A Leo MC may want to create, lead, perform, entertain, or be recognized for something distinctly theirs. They would generally prefer that the school fundraiser they organized be described as “legendary” rather than “well attended.”

A Capricorn MC may take achievement extremely seriously, whether the goal is making partner, running a nonprofit, becoming president of the historical society, or having every Christmas present purchased and wrapped by December 3.

And sometimes your MC describes the reputation you develop almost accidentally.

Maybe you become the family member everyone trusts to handle the complicated paperwork. The parent who somehow ends up running every school event. The friend who organizes the annual beach trip because everyone remembers what happened the year Kevin booked the house.

The planet ruling your MC sign adds another layer.

If you have a Gemini MC, Mercury rules it. Mercury’s sign, house, and aspects can tell you more about how communication, information, writing, learning, or ideas connect with your larger ambitions.

If you have a Libra MC, look to Venus.

If you have a Capricorn MC, look to Saturn, which feels appropriate for a placement that probably came out of the womb requesting a five-year plan.

Planets close to your MC can become especially prominent too.

Mars conjunct the MC can bring drive, competitiveness, initiative, and a willingness to take charge. This can be the person who attends one PTA meeting and somehow leaves as treasurer.

Venus conjunct the MC can connect reputation and achievement with creativity, aesthetics, diplomacy, relationships, or social skill. This may be someone remembered for making things beautiful, bringing people together, or knowing how to tell Brenda her centerpiece idea is hideous in a way that somehow leaves Brenda feeling appreciated.

Saturn conjunct the MC can bring responsibility, authority, high standards, and a long view. This person may spend years becoming exceptionally good at something and then respond to praise with a detailed explanation of everything they still need to improve.

The MC can tell you something surprisingly specific about what counts as achievement to you.

Because everybody wants to be proud of something. We simply disagree wildly about what deserves the trophy.

Your MC and the Sky Right Now

Your MC stays fixed in your birth chart, while the planets continue moving and periodically cross or make aspects to it.

These transits can correspond with changes involving reputation, responsibility, recognition, ambition, leadership, or whatever you’re currently trying to accomplish in the larger world.

And again, this does not require an office.

Jupiter crossing your MC can coincide with expansion, recognition, opportunity, or feeling ready to aim higher. You might get a promotion. Your book might find a bigger audience. You might take over a community project that began with “We just need someone to send a few emails” and now somehow involves permits.

Saturn crossing your MC can bring increased responsibility, commitment, authority, or a serious reckoning with what you’re building. Maybe you become a manager. Maybe an aging parent needs you. Maybe you become president of an organization and discover that leadership is mostly answering messages beginning with “Quick question.”

Uranus crossing your MC can coincide with a substantial change in direction or reputation. Something you’ve been working toward for years may suddenly feel strangely irrelevant. A completely different path can become much more interesting.

Neptune crossing your MC can make your direction harder to define and potentially draw you toward creative, spiritual, charitable, or less conventional ambitions. The answer to “So what are you doing these days?” may require several sentences and possibly a diagram.

Pluto crossing your MC can bring major changes around achievement, power, authority, reputation, or what you want your life associated with. Goals that once seemed extremely important can lose their grip. Others can become almost impossible to ignore.

Faster planets cross the MC too.

Mars can bring a brief surge of ambition, competitiveness, or willingness to take charge. Mercury can bring conversations, decisions, announcements, paperwork, or planning. Venus can bring smoother interactions, creativity, social opportunities, or recognition.

The outer planets can spend months hovering around this point, crossing it, retrograding back over it, and crossing it again.

Apparently some life directions require several strongly worded follow-up emails.
