Beginner Guide to the Lunar Noes — Astrology
The North Node and South Node also known as the lunar nodes. They’re a packaged deal. They sit directly opposite each other in your birth chart and describe a tug-of-war between what comes naturally and what you’re being asked to get better at.
Now, let’s be clear, they aren’t planets or physical objects. You can’t glance up and see the nodes, even with a telescope.
They’re mathematical points where the Moon’s orbit crosses the path of the Sun from our perspective on Earth.
(I know, WUT, me too, don’t worry about it, just keep going…)
The South Node represents familiar territory. Habits, skills, instincts, and ways of operating that feel so normal you may barely notice you’re doing them.
The North Node points in the opposite direction, toward qualities and experiences that require more conscious effort.
So, if the South Node is the thing you can do while eating a sandwich you made on autopilot, the North Node is that pesky little thing begging to be explored, even though it feels hard. That stuff that some corner of your soul insists upon, even though you’re like, “Yeah, but I like this couch cushion…”
Your South Node
The South Node is your well-worn path.
It’s comfy.
It represents qualities and behaviors that tend to feel instinctive, familiar, and extremely easy to fall back on. Depending on your preferred flavor of astrology, you’ll also hear it described in terms of karma or past lives.
You can absolutely go there. A lot of astrologers tie it to past lives and such, and … eh. That language doesn't really speak to me. But I still find South Nodes useful even if your personal belief system does not include having previously been a 14th-century Venetian merchant.
The South Node can simply describe patterns you might be stuck in, even if the patterns aren’t bad.
A South Node in Aries may be excellent at independence, self-reliance, quick decisions, and handling things alone. Ask for help? Interesting concept. They’ll consider it immediately after carrying all six grocery bags upstairs in one trip.
A South Node in Virgo may be skilled at noticing problems, improving things, staying useful, and figuring out exactly what needs to happen next. Put them in a chaotic situation and they’ve already made a list. The difficulty comes when nobody requested a list and everyone else was apparently just trying to enjoy the picnic.
A South Node in Capricorn may be comfortable with responsibility, achievement, self-control, and being the competent one. They’re the person everyone trusts in a crisis, partly because they have already located the fire extinguisher and partly because crying has been penciled in for Thursday.
Your South Node house shows where those familiar patterns tend to play out, perhaps even more than the sign.
A South Node in the 3rd House may be very comfortable collecting information, talking things through, staying busy, asking questions, and knowing what’s happening five blocks away. Their browser history could qualify as continuing education.
A South Node in the 6th House may be exceptionally comfortable with work, routines, productivity, usefulness, and taking care of details. A relaxing Saturday can mysteriously become cleaning the refrigerator coils because “it’s part of the deep cleaning checklist!”
A South Node in the 10th House may be accustomed to achievement, responsibility, recognition, authority, or being known as the person who has everything handled. Their idea of asking for support may be telling you which three tasks you’re allowed to help with.
The South Node contains our real and genuine strengths, but the trick is we can also sometimes get stuck.
That’s where the North Node comes in.
Your North Node
Your North Node sits directly opposite your South Node by sign and house.
If your South Node is in Aries, your North Node is in Libra. South Node in Virgo means North Node in Pisces. South Node in the 10th House means North Node in the 4th.
The North Node describes qualities you’re being encouraged to develop over the course of your life.
This is why the North Node tends to get more attention in astrology; it points toward growth. And growth is self-help porn. People love that stuff.
Basically, if the South Node can explain a great deal about why you operate the way you already do. The North Node gives you somewhere to go with that information And North Node territory can initially feel awkward precisely because you haven’t been practicing it nearly as much.
A North Node in Libra may need to learn cooperation, compromise, partnership, and how to make room for another person’s needs. This can be deeply educational for someone whose South Node in Aries has spent 30 years saying, “It’s easier if I just tell everyone how it’s done…”
A North Node in Pisces may be learning to tolerate uncertainty, trust intuition, loosen control, and occasionally allow something to remain imperfect. Somewhere, their Virgo South Node is watching someone load the dishwasher incorrectly and experiencing spiritual growth against its will.
A North Node in Cancer may be learning about emotional openness, home, family, care, vulnerability, or allowing themselves to need other people. Their Capricorn South Node would prefer to circle back after everyone has reviewed the quarterly objectives.
The houses make the axis even more specific.
A North Node in the 4th House with a South Node in the 10th can describe a shift away from defining life primarily through achievement, status, responsibility, or external recognition and toward developing a richer private life, home life, family life, or internal sense of belonging.
This can be someone who has spent years being extremely impressive and eventually discovers they would also like to own sweatpants.
A North Node in the 7th House with a South Node in the 1st can emphasize learning through partnership. Independence may come easily. The growth comes through collaboration, compromise, commitment, and accepting the deeply inconvenient fact that another human occasionally gets a vote.
A North Node in the 11th House with a South Node in the 5th can shift emphasis from personal creativity, attention, romance, or individual expression toward community, collaboration, shared goals, and contributing to something larger.
Why You Need Both Nodes
It’s tempting to think of the North Node as “good” (new growth!) and the South Node as “bad” (rusty habits!)
Resist that urge, my friend!
Rather than one version being “old you” think of it more like, your South Node contains skills you already know how to use. Your North Node asks you to take what’s already amazing about you and apply it somewhere fresh.
For example. (I love examples!!!) …
Someone with an Aries South Node doesn’t need to stop being independent to develop Libra qualities. Their independence is genuinely amazing. Their assignment just means learning that “I can do it myself” and “we can do it together” are both available options.
And a Virgo South Node doesn’t need to throw away the planner and begin making major decisions based on messages received from passing clouds. Their discernment, practicality, and attention to detail remain useful. Pisces simply asks them to develop some tolerance for ambiguity alongside all that competence.
A Capricorn South Node doesn’t need to resign from the board, abandon all gym goals, and spend the rest of their life baking muffins for relatives. Cancer just asks them to make room for those messy emotional moments that aren’t, strictly speaking, practical.
Think of the nodes as an axis rather than two separate assignments.
You already have one end of the seesaw pretty well covered, so just know that life is going to beckon you to keep adding weight to the other side.
The Nodes by Sign
Because the North and South Nodes always oppose each other, there are six possible sign axes.
For example, every single person with a Gemini North Node is always going to have a Sag South Node. There’s no such thing as someone with a Leo North Node and a Pisces South Node, it MUST be Leo North Node and Aquarius South Mode. The combinations are limited. #science
Aries North Node / Libra South Node
Developing independence, initiative, and self-direction while drawing on existing skills around partnership, compromise, and considering other people. Sometimes everyone really does need to be happy with the restaurant choice. Sometimes you are allowed to say, “I want Thai.”
Taurus North Node / Scorpio South Node
Developing stability, simplicity, patience, and self-reliance while drawing on an existing comfort with intensity, complexity, and crisis. Sometimes the situation genuinely requires a five-alarm response. Sometimes the email just says “K.”
Gemini North Node / Sagittarius South Node
Developing curiosity, listening, questions, and openness to multiple perspectives while drawing on your existing big-picture beliefs and convictions. The growth may be a willingness to say, “I don’t know” before launching into all the things you do know,
Cancer North Node / Capricorn South Node
Developing care, vulnerability, home, emotional connection, and the ability to have needs while drawing on existing competence, ambition, and responsibility. The five-year plan may occasionally need to account for being a human mammal.
Leo North Node / Aquarius South Node
Developing personal creativity, visibility, confidence, and individual expression while drawing on an existing ability to understand groups, systems, and collective concerns. Sometimes the group project needs your specific weird idea.
Virgo North Node / Pisces South Node
Developing discernment, structure, practical skills, and attention to detail while drawing on existing intuition, imagination, and openness. Eventually someone does have to make the dentist appointment, so …
And Going the Other Direction...
The same six axes can point the other way, and that changes the assignment considerably. A Libra North Node and an Aries North Node share the same axis, but they’re starting from opposite ends of it.
Libra North Node / Aries South Node
Developing cooperation, partnership, compromise, and consideration while drawing on existing independence and self-reliance. You already know you can carry the couch yourself. The assignment is letting someone grab the other end.
Scorpio North Node / Taurus South Node
Developing intimacy, vulnerability, complexity, and a willingness to enter uncomfortable territory while drawing on an existing talent for stability and self-sufficiency. Eventually “I’m fine” stops being a complete emotional filing system.
Sagittarius North Node / Gemini South Node
Developing conviction, perspective, meaning, and a larger worldview while drawing on existing curiosity and mental flexibility. At some point you have read enough Reddit threads. You are allowed to form an opinion.
Capricorn North Node / Cancer South Node
Developing structure, authority, independence, and the confidence to pursue tangible goals while drawing on existing emotional awareness and instincts for care. Loving everybody is lovely. Somebody still has to call the contractor and ask why the kitchen currently has no wall.
Aquarius North Node / Leo South Node
Developing collaboration, community, objectivity, and investment in something larger than yourself while drawing on existing creativity and confidence. You already know how to take a bow. Now somebody needs you backstage holding the ladder, and maybe looking for ways to improve it, even if you never get credit.
Pisces North Node / Virgo South Node
Developing trust, intuition, imagination, acceptance, and greater tolerance for uncertainty while drawing on existing discernment and practical competence. The spreadsheet has done everything it can, and buckle up, because you may now have to make a decision with only 87 percent of the information.
