Beginner Guide to Mercury — Astrology

In astrology, Mercury represents communication, thinking, information, learning, language, curiosity, and the way ideas get from Point A to Point B.

Mercury in Your Birth Chart

When you were born, Mercury was traveling through one of the twelve zodiac signs. That sign is your Mercury sign.

Your Mercury sign describes how your brain likes to work and how you communicate what’s going on in there.

It’s how you explain a story, learn something new, ask questions, make decisions, give directions, write an email, and decide which completely unnecessary fact deserves permanent storage in your brain.

An Aries Mercury may get to the point quickly and occasionally arrive there before everyone else has finished the question. A Virgo Mercury may notice that paragraph three contradicts paragraph seven and would like to discuss it. A Sagittarius Mercury may begin a story about something that happened at Pilates and somehow end up explaining their entire philosophy of modern capitalism.

Mercury also covers how you take in information.

Some people need to talk something through. Some need to read about it. Some need bullet points. Some need to ask 14 questions, Google two things under the table, and come back tomorrow after they’ve formed an opinion.

Your Mercury house shows where all that thinking, talking, questioning, and information-gathering tends to concentrate.

A 2nd House Mercury may spend a surprising amount of mental energy on money, possessions, earning, or figuring out whether the family-size package is genuinely cheaper per ounce.

A 6th House Mercury may have a brain permanently occupied by schedules, lists, work, errands, health, and remembering that the dog needs heartworm medication on Thursday.

A 9th House Mercury may be drawn to big ideas, higher education, philosophy, travel, languages, publishing, or reading 400 pages about the Roman Empire because one podcast mentioned aqueducts.

Aspects to Mercury add another layer.

Mercury conjunct Venus can give communication a more charming, diplomatic, creative, or aesthetically minded quality. Mercury square Mars can make words faster, sharper, and considerably more willing to turn a minor disagreement into closing arguments. Mercury opposite Saturn may bring a more careful or serious approach to communication, including rereading a four-line email until the word “Thanks” begins to look vaguely hostile.

Mercury is also one reason people with the same Sun sign can communicate completely differently.

Two Leos can share plenty of Leo qualities while one has Mercury in Cancer and writes three paragraphs explaining why your text hurt their feelings, and the other has Mercury in Virgo and would first like to clarify the timeline.

Mercury in the Sky Right Now

Mercury moves quickly, usually spending a few weeks in each zodiac sign, although retrogrades can keep it hanging around one part of the zodiac considerably longer.

When astrologers say “Mercury enters Scorpio,” they mean Mercury is currently moving into Scorpio. Communication, information, learning, and conversation take on some Scorpio flavor. Questions may get more probing. Surface-level explanations become less satisfying. Someone says, “It’s a long story,” and suddenly you have cleared your afternoon.

Mercury also moves through the houses of your birth chart.

When Mercury travels through your 3rd House, communication and information can get especially busy. More messages. More errands. More conversations. More things to read, answer, remember, and write down somewhere you will theoretically find later.

When Mercury moves through your 8th House, your attention may turn toward shared money, taxes, debt, intimacy, secrets, or complicated subjects people generally avoid bringing up while the appetizers are still on the table.

Mercury also makes aspects as it moves.

Mercury trine Jupiter can be useful for big-picture thinking, learning, writing, planning, or finally understanding something that previously made your eyes glaze over. Mercury square Mars can make conversations quicker and more argumentative, with everyone suddenly possessing very strong opinions about where the car should be parked.

Mercury conjunct Pluto can turn the mental volume up considerably. Research gets deeper. Conversations get more intense. The innocent decision to look up one symptom can end 90 minutes later with twelve medical tabs and a working knowledge of a condition last documented in Belgium in 1974.

And then, of course, there’s Mercury retrograde.

A few times each year, Mercury appears from Earth to move backward through the zodiac. During these periods, astrologers pay extra attention to Mercury territory: communication, information, technology, transportation, schedules, paperwork, and plans.

Mercury retrograde has become astrology’s favorite suspect for every missed train and malfunctioning printer, which gives one planet an impressive amount of responsibility for human incompetence.

Astrologically, retrogrades are also associated with revisiting, reviewing, rethinking, reconnecting, and correcting. An old conversation resurfaces. A project needs another pass. Someone you haven’t heard from since 2019 texts “Hey stranger.” You discover the flight you booked six weeks ago is departing from Newark when you were absolutely certain you chose JFK.

Mercury keeps information moving.

Sometimes smoothly.

Sometimes through a 37-message email chain in which nobody has answered the original question.
