Beginner Guide to the Moon — Astrology

In astrology, the Moon represents your inner operating system: instincts, needs, habits, comfort, memory, moods, and the things that make you feel safe and settled.

The Moon in Your Birth Chart

When you were born, the Moon was traveling through one of the twelve zodiac signs. That sign is your Moon sign.

Your Moon sign describes the version of you running quietly in the background. The habits you fall into automatically. What you reach for when you need comfort. What makes you feel at home. What irritates you before you’ve had time to decide whether it should.

It’s the part of you that has already reacted while the rest of you is still composing an appropriate response.

An Aries Moon may decide they’re furious, say the thing, cool off, and be genuinely confused that everyone else is still upset an hour later. A Taurus Moon may have a preferred blanket, preferred takeout order, preferred side of the couch, and absolutely no interest in hearing why tonight would be a fun night to “switch things up.” A Gemini Moon may call someone to discuss what happened, text someone else about the call, and think of the perfect explanation while brushing their teeth six hours later.

The Moon also has a lot to do with comfort and security, including the strangely specific things your brain has decided mean everything is okay.

Maybe it’s having food in the fridge. Maybe it’s knowing exactly what the plan is tomorrow. Maybe it’s calling your sister. Maybe it’s rewatching the same television series for the ninth time because everyone in Stars Hollow already knows their lines and you have enough uncertainty going on elsewhere.

The Moon’s house shows where many of these instincts and needs tend to show up.

A 2nd House Moon may feel considerably better when money, possessions, and practical resources are in order. There is a meaningful psychological difference between “we have plenty of toilet paper” and “we have one roll left.”

A 4th House Moon may have a strong attachment to home, family, privacy, and familiar surroundings. This is someone who can spend three nights at a luxury hotel and still feel genuine relief upon seeing their own dent in the couch.

An 11th House Moon may feel especially at home within friendships, communities, networks, or groups of people who share their interests. That community could be six close friends who have known each other since college. It could also be three people in a niche online forum who have spent four years discussing mechanical keyboards.

Aspects to your Moon add another layer.

Moon conjunct Venus can connect comfort with affection, beauty, pleasure, and relationships. Moon square Mars may give instinctive reactions considerably more horsepower, including the occasional leap from “someone moved my charger” to conducting a full criminal investigation. Moon opposite Saturn can add restraint, self-reliance, seriousness, or a strong preference for getting yourself together before anybody sees the mess.

Your Moon sign often becomes easiest to spot when nobody is performing for anybody.

It’s you at home. You when you’re exhausted. You when plans change unexpectedly. You when the restaurant says they’re out of the thing you already decided you were ordering.

Basically, it’s the version of you running the place when upper management has gone home.

The Moon in the Sky Right Now

The Moon is the fastest-moving major body astrologers track, traveling through the entire zodiac in about 27 days and changing signs roughly every two and a half days.

That means the Moon changes the flavor of the day pretty quickly.

When astrologers say “the Moon enters Virgo today,” they mean the Moon is currently moving into Virgo. For the next couple of days, everyday instincts and attention can take on some Virgo flavor. Details become harder to ignore. Loose ends start looking increasingly offensive. Reorganizing the medicine cabinet at 9:40 p.m. can suddenly feel like an urgent and reasonable project.

The Moon also moves through every house of your birth chart each month.

When it passes through your 2nd House, money, possessions, comfort, or security may occupy more bandwidth. You might check your bank balance twice, stock the pantry, or become disproportionately pleased that your favorite shampoo is on sale.

When the Moon moves through your 7th House, relationships and one-to-one interactions get the Moon’s attention. Suddenly you have several questions about the precise punctuation your partner used in “okay.”

And because the Moon moves so quickly, it is constantly making aspects to other planets.

A Moon-Venus conjunction can emphasize affection, pleasure, social connection, or comfort. Moon square Mars can add impatience, reactivity, or the powerful conviction that the person walking slowly in front of you has selected you personally for this experience. Moon conjunct Saturn can bring a more serious, contained, or solitary tone.

The Moon also makes aspects to planets in your birth chart. When the transiting Moon returns to your natal Moon, you experience your monthly lunar return. When it hits your natal Mars, your reactions may acquire a little extra heat. When it reaches your natal Venus, relationships, pleasure, beauty, or comfort may briefly become more prominent.

These transits move quickly, often lasting hours rather than days. Think of the Moon as one of astrology’s shortest-term indicators.

It’s the difference between having a life crisis and having a weird Wednesday.
