Beginner Guide to the Sun — Astrology

In astrology, the Sun represents identity, vitality, confidence, ego, purpose, and visibility.

Basically, it’s the part of you that would like some editorial control over the biography.

The Sun is concerned with having a clear sense of self and enough confidence to occupy it. It likes recognition, authorship, and the satisfying feeling of saying, “I did that,” especially when you did, in fact, do that.

The Sun in Your Birth Chart

When you were born, the Sun was traveling through one of the twelve zodiac signs. That sign is your Sun sign.

So when someone says, “I’m a Taurus,” “I’m a Libra,” or “I’m a Pisces, which explains everything,” they’re usually talking about their Sun.

Your Sun sign describes the style through which you develop identity, confidence, purpose, and personal authority.

An Aries Sun may feel most like themselves when they’re initiating something, making their own decisions, and moving before the committee has finished discussing the options. A Virgo Sun may take pride in being capable, useful, observant, and the person who remembered to bring the confirmation number. An Aquarius Sun may build identity around independence, ideas, originality, or having an opinion about the system everyone else quietly accepted three decades ago.

Your Sun’s house matters too.

The house shows the area of life where your Sun tends to invest a lot of itself.

A 3rd House Sun may build confidence through writing, speaking, learning, exchanging ideas, or becoming the family member everyone texts when they need to know whether “affect” or “effect” belongs in the sentence.

A 7th House Sun may discover a lot about themselves through close partnerships and the experience of building a life alongside another person.

A 10th House Sun may care deeply about achievement, contribution, reputation, or having something substantial to point to when someone asks what they’ve been doing for the past ten years.

Then there are aspects.

Other planets interacting with your natal Sun can change how all this identity business operates.

Sun conjunct Jupiter may make confidence, optimism, growth, or ambition a bigger part of the equation. Sun square Saturn can bring a much stricter internal performance review, with confidence developing through experience, discipline, and repeatedly discovering that the imaginary panel of judges was largely imaginary. Sun opposite Pluto can make questions of power, control, autonomy, and self-definition especially difficult to ignore.

Your Sun sign is important.

It’s also one piece of an entire chart, which is why two Geminis can meet each other and spend the evening wondering who has made a clerical error.

The Sun in the Sky Right Now

Your birth chart stays fixed at the moment you were born.

The Sun keeps moving.

Astrologers call the current movement of planets through the zodiac transits. The Sun takes about a year to travel through all twelve signs, spending roughly a month in each one.

That’s what people mean when they say things like “the Sun enters Scorpio on Tuesday.” The Sun has moved from one section of the zodiac into another, bringing its usual concerns with identity, vitality, visibility, confidence, and purpose along with it.

The Sun also moves through the houses of your birth chart.

Say the Sun enters your 6th House. For the next few weeks, everyday life may command more of your attention. Work. Routines. Health. Appointments. The slowly escalating situation involving the pile of clothes on the chair.

When it reaches your 11th House, attention may shift toward friends, communities, professional networks, long-term plans, or the deeply humbling experience of trying to coordinate dinner with seven adults.

The Sun also makes aspects as it moves.

If the transiting Sun conjuncts your natal Venus, Venus topics like relationships, pleasure, beauty, money, and values temporarily get some extra solar attention. You might feel especially social, creative, affectionate, or interested in spending $180 on a lamp because apparently lighting is part of your identity now.

If the Sun opposes your natal Pluto, themes around control, power, identity, or autonomy may become harder to ignore. Maybe your boss questions a decision you consider firmly yours. Maybe somebody pushes a button you were under the impression had been professionally removed. Maybe you discover that your desire to “keep the peace” has mysteriously transformed into an extremely detailed internal prosecution.

And sometimes astrologers are talking about aspects happening entirely in the current sky.

If the transiting Sun squares transiting Mars, for example, the astrology of that day combines the Sun’s ego, visibility, and will with Mars’s action, competition, anger, and impatience. That can describe a more combustible atmosphere in general, whether or not it hits something especially important in your personal chart.

This is why knowing what the Sun represents is useful far beyond knowing your Sun sign.

The Sun can describe something fundamental about you because of where it was when you were born.

It can also wander into your 4th House next Thursday, square your natal Saturn, oppose Pluto in the current sky, and generally continue doing its job long after you’ve finished reading your horoscope.
